Flooded Basement Cleanup

Flooded Basement Cleanup Methods

Water damage is a homeowner’s worst nightmare. A flooded basement can cause extensive damage to your home and belongings, and can even lead to structural damage. If you’ve experienced a flood in your basement, here are some flooded basement cleanup methods helps you to back your home normal.

  • If the water has receded but there is still standing water in the basement, use a wet/dry vacuum or shop-vac with an extension hose attachment (depending on how far below ground level) to suck out as much water as possible before moving on to step 2.
  • Open all of the windows if they weren’t ruined by flooding for ventilation purposes so that moisture doesn’t build up inside of them again while mold starts growing behind the scenes.
  • Start by removing any ruined carpeting, padding, and wet insulation. These materials will need to be replaced anyway so it’s best to get rid of them as soon as possible.
  • Toss anything that has been soaked and can’t be salvaged. This includes carpeting, drywall, insulation, and any personal belongings that have been damaged beyond repair.  If you have any electronics that got wet, it’s best to just trash them as well since they could pose a shock hazard.
  • Mop the floor with disinfectant and let it air dry or use fans to speed up the process. After the floor is dry, you can start setting up dehumidifiers if you have a lot of moisture in the air. Be sure to empty them frequently.
  • Move any undamaged belongings back into the basement and start working on repairing any damage that was done by the floodwater. This may include painting, patching holes in walls, etc.

If you follow these steps, your basement should be clean, dry, and free of any water damage. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to help.

Prevention tips for avoiding future floods

By following these steps, you can clean up a flooded basement and prevent future damage.

  1. Don’t store anything in the basement that could cause a buildup of dampness or standing water, such as paint cans, motor oil bottles, antifreeze containers and heavy furniture.
  2. Do not flush your toilet if it is plugged up with paper towels or other trash.  This will only worsen the problem and make more work for you later on.
  3. Put down an absorbent mat at any entry point to your basement (i.e., doorways). This can help soak up some moisture before it enters the rest of your home.
  4. Install a dehumidifier to help dry out the air in your basement and prevent mold growth.
  5. Consider waterproofing your basement walls to help keep water out in the future.
